Pilates is named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates who developed his technique in the 1920’s, encompassing his knowledge of boxing, dancing, and yoga.  He developed a comprehensive, whole-body system of exercises, performed on the floor mat and/or spring based equipment, designed to balance the body’s muscles and increase flexibility, strength, and agility.

While conventional workouts tend to develop and shorten the outer, superficial muscles, Pilates’ program initiates a strong and controlled “core”, from the center of the body (the spine), integrating trunk, pelvis and shoulder girdle.  Exercises based on linear movement encourage elongation of the muscles, increasing muscle elasticity and joint mobility.  The Pilates exercises are low-impact, fluid, and gentle, yet, as challenging to an avid athlete as to a novice.

The emphasis on proper breathing and concentration during movements encourages the understanding of how one’s body functions, where it is in space, and how to control one’s movements.
